Clear Wiki Review

This review was posted on the ClearWiki intro page in the documentation Wiki by Steve LeBlanc. We  think reviews are better fitted here in the forums so we took the freedom to move it here. Steve's review follows (followed up by a second post with the answers by the ClearWiki team).

ClearWiki is in Beta. And it shows. It has too many problems to use right now. It seems mostly well thought out, but not well executed.

1. I like that you can change all user fields, including a user’s email address, which is used as a login. But even the administrator can’t delete users.

2. I like that it works on IE 6. But it does not work well. The page clips words on the right. It was not tested adequately in the browser.

3. I like that you can create multiple Todo lists. But when creating one, the button says: Add Todo List. It sounds like I should add my first item to my DO list. But no. I need to name the list. Change the text on that button to: “Create New List called”. Or something like that.

4. I like that the cursor goes into the text box after creating each new Todo Item. But it does not go there after creating a new list. You have to click in it.

5. I like the editor well enough. But when you enter edit mode, the cursor is NOT inside the edit box. You have to click inside the box.

6. I like the Complete and Delete link after each Todo item, but I’d slightly prefer a checkbox. More intuitive. Bit harder to code.

7. Todo list is great, but you can’t edit Todo items. What if you made a mistake in one item? You need to delete it and start from scratch.

8. I like that you can star items, like list titles. But you can’t see the lists that are starred when you click on Todo Lists link. Make it look like the list of File attachments, at bottom of a homepage.

9. WISH: On lists: I’d like to see stars on list items, not just the title of the list.

10. COOL: Under each list title, there are links to: make private / make accessible to all users

11. COOL: I like that it’s fast.

12. I like that you can put up a logo of 500×50 pixels. Weird size, but okay. Problem is that you can’t Delete it after you upload. What if I don’t like it, and I have no new graphic to put up.

13. I like that the TAB key takes you OUT of the edit box, sort of. You have to hit SPACE in order to activate the SAVE button, after pressing TAB. If you hit Enter, you get a carriage return in the edit box.

14. I like that you can upload a TXT file. But when you VIEW the file, it shows up in PRE mode, meaning no wordwrap. Drag.

15. I like that there are Labels, (some of us call them tags). But I can’t see how to apply a label to a blog entry or list. Oh, you have to go into Full View after you have finished entering it? Cludgy. Not graceful.

16. I like having a Homepage. But you can’t get to it from the Wiki. You must hit: Settings/Your account/User’s homepage.

17. WISH: A little optional coloring of the wiki. Maybe some pastels, or select by color code.

18. I like how easy it is to enter a blog item, but you can’t edit blog items from the Full View mode. Only: Rename Delete Move

19. I like that it’s easy to Create an Account, but I would have like to see a demo before I did that. I forgot about

20. Conclusion: This wiki is off to a great start. I love its potential. But it is not yet polished enough to use. Most troubling is that you can’t delete users or delete the whole clearwiki account.

Re: Clear Wiki Review

And these answers were added by the ClarWiki team

Hi Steve, Great feedback thanks. We have addressed (and fixed!)a number of your points below.

1. I like that you can change all user fields, including a user’s email address, which is used as a login. But even the administrator can’t delete users.

Administrators can now delete user accounts completely. Locking is also an option to temporarily suspend a user account. see the ClearWiki faqs

2. I like that it works on IE 6. But it does not work well. The page clips words on the right. It was not tested adequately in the browser.

We are looking into this clipping issue

3. I like that you can create multiple Todo lists. But when creating one, the button says: Add Todo List. It sounds like I should add my first item to my DO list. But no. I need to name the list. Change the text on that button to: “Create New List called”. Or something like that.

This has been changed to be more user friendly as you suggest

4. I like that the cursor goes into the text box after creating each new Todo Item. But it does not go there after creating a new list. You have to click in it.

Fixed. the text box is now focussed

5. I like the editor well enough. But when you enter edit mode, the cursor is NOT inside the edit box. You have to click inside the box.

Fixed. the editor is now focussed

6. I like the Complete and Delete link after each Todo item, but I’d slightly prefer a checkbox. More intuitive. Bit harder to code.

I am not sure we agree with this - personal taste I guess

7. Todo list is great, but you can’t edit Todo items. What if you made a mistake in one item? You need to delete it and start from scratch.

Coming later

8. I like that you can star items, like list titles. But you can’t see the lists that are starred when you click on Todo Lists link. Make it look like the list of File attachments, at bottom of a homepage.

Done - there are stars now against each todo list

12. I like that you can put up a logo of 500×50 pixels. Weird size, but okay. Problem is that you can’t Delete it after you upload. What if I don’t like it, and I have no new graphic to put up.

There always has been an option to remove a logo that you upload - on the same page where the logo is uploaded

16. I like having a Homepage. But you can’t get to it from the Wiki. You must hit: Settings/Your account/User’s homepage.

There are a number of ways to get to your homepage once it has been created. The username in the header is linked to it, the sitemap has homepage links, and the user directory also has links to homepages

18. I like how easy it is to enter a blog item, but you can’t edit blog items from the Full View mode. Only: Rename Delete Move

Fixed - blog items are editavle from Full View mode now

20. Conclusion: This wiki is off to a great start. I love its potential. But it is not yet polished enough to use. Most troubling is that you can’t delete users or delete the whole clearwiki account.

There is an option to permanently delete a user now - we will be adding an option to remove the entire wiki.

Re: Clear Wiki Review

1. The IE6 clipping issue mentioned above has been fixed.
2. The ability to delete a wiki has also been added
