Deleting Wikis from Wikia

We are considering launching a wiki targetted to a global community of prospective users.  We are struggling with the question as to whether there is merit in launching it with the Wikia community in the hopes of finding a more robust adhoc development community with which to exchange ideas and solutions.  That being said, I'm interested to know what happens at such time that we should determine that we want to migrate to an independently hosted site.  We are committed to mediawiki and would in all likelihood migrate to a hosted solution.  What is the procedure with respect to deleting the content in the wiki that was created (hypothetically) at Wikia?
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Re: Deleting Wikis from Wikia

Hi John. I'm one of the founders of Wikia and we'd love to have your community join us. You're right to assume that Wikia can help you to find a development community more easily. We have cross-promotion for wikis within Wikia, topic portals to help people find relevant wikis, and the high page rank of wikia.com can help interested people to find the wiki through search engines. We also have features that aren't available in the default MediaWiki to help you draw people in, such as forums, blogs, friend invites and links from articles to make social bookmarking easier.

All content is released under a free license and database dumps are available, so it's possible for anyone to copy the content to a new site at any time. It's rare that a whole community decides to leave, so closing wikis does not often happen. Im interested to know why you are thinking you would want to migrate to independent hosting. Most wikis go the other way when they find about the costs and technical trouble and the lack of features in the default install. smile

Re: Deleting Wikis from Wikia

Angela, I'm quite aware of your role with Wikia, impressed with your vision and, I suppose, should not be surprised to hear from you directly.

We are prepared to proceed with a wiki targeted at the Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conferences and Exhibitions Industry (MICE).  The prospective user group is estimated to be somewhere around 400,000.  I think that it would be best situated under the Travel hub and in fact, have submitted a request for a new wiki.  We see this as an opportunity to connect a very disintegrated array of information repositories in a way that will be very useful to the practitioners.  We have enthusiastic support from influential players and several of the universities with graduate programs in this focus area.

I fully recognize, appreciate and prefer the benefits of the larger community of wiki participants that exists within Wikia.  My concern is that some stakeholders may at some point want to enable carefully targeted vendors to advertise on the site and I fully understand that this is a means of supporting the Wikia venture.  This possible future conflict is the only motivation that I could imagine might cause us to consider migrating the site as it matures.  With Wikia, what are the possibilities that we could offer advertising that would inure solely (or jointly) to our stakeholders?

I understand the implication of the release of content.  However, in the case of a decision to migrate, following a data dump to a new site, what happens to the content that resided on the Wikia site?  Can we choose to delete the content?

Thanks very much for your kind attention.
