How to install a wiki on a local PC (Windows XP) ? / wiki for science?

Hi,

I'm searching for a way to store my thoughts and information useful for my work (PhD thesis) and I wanted to try out a wiki (never been working with one before).

Uniwakka Wiki (http://uniwakka.sourceforge.net/HomePage) seems quite interesting to me as it can also handle bibliographic information and LaTeX equations (both important for my work) and even export to a real LaTeX document.

However, I can't find information about how to install such a wiki on my local PC.
For trying it out I don't want to have it on a web or intranet server, but just on my PC with Windows XP SP2.

Can anybody tell me where to find a good tutorial for installing/configuring the necessary web server (Apache or is it also possible with Win XP directly?), PHP and MySQL on Windows XP to install the wiki?

I'm thankful for any hint, because I've been browsing the WWW quite a long time, but I can't find helpful information on that topic.
:-(

2nd one:
I did not find much info and discussion about Uniwakka Wiki (the Uniwakka forum on this site here is completely empty), so maybe it would be a better choice to take a wiki which is more oftenly used ...
Can you recommend me a Wiki suitable for notes in natural sciences,
- mathematical formulas (if possible with LaTeX syntax, as I'm writing my thesis with LaTeX)
- embedding graphics (jpeg, png, wmf) possible
- use the bibliographic information of BibTeX files - and cite sources imported from a bibtex file
- create LaTeX output to easily copy parts of the text in a publication

Any help is appreciated

Martin

Totally unbaised ;-) I can recommend TWiki. There is a virtual appliance that can be installed on Windows quite easily. There are also plugins for math and plugins to export content.

TWiki is listed here on WikiMatrix at http://www.wikimatrix.org/show/TWiki

Installing a Desktop Wiki:

How to install DokuWiki on Windows XP in less then 5 minutes:

1) Download and install WAMP5 1.7.3 (or the latest version) for Windows XP:
   http://www.wampserver.com/en/ (easy no brainer installation)
2) Download and unzip DokuWiki:
   http://www.splitbrain.org/projects/dokuwiki
3) In Windows explorer browse to C:\wamp\www\ and create a folder called DokuWiki
4) Copy all of your unzipped DokuWiki files to: C:\wamp\www\DokuWiki
5) Start your wamp server if it's not already running (All Programs/Wamp Server/Start Wampserver)
6) In your browser go to: http://localhost/DokuWiki/install.php and fill in the blanks.

How to setup MediaWiki on Windows XP (a little harder because you are setting up a database):

Note: It really doesn't get any easier then DokuWiki but it shouldn't be much of a hassle installing any of the other Wikis on your desktop using the WAMP Server if they are wikis that will run on a LAMP server (Linux, referring to the operating system; Apache, the Web server; MySQL, the database management system (or database server); PHP, Perl or Python, the programming languages.)

Desktop MoinMoin A quick and easy way to experience MoinMoin with near-zero set-up (you simply unzip the file to a folder and click start)! http://moinmo.in/DesktopEdition

Desktop XWiki Another easy to install and use wiki: http://www.xwiki.org/ The Windows install is here: http://forge.objectweb.org/project/down … le_id=8307
