Hello,
I'm looking for a Wiki site that allows me to create a free hosted private wiki, which keeps a Wanted and Orphaned page list and allows for the visiting of a random page on the wiki, like WikiPedia does.
Page history isn't needed, nor is WYSIWYG or corporate branding (not sure if I want an own domain actually - what difference does it make?) I tried the choice wizard, but it doesn't seem to allow me to figure out if it allows for private wiki's and if it has the option of going to a random page.
Wikia seemed perfect except for the fact that it doesn't allow for private wiki's... and MediaWiki (which is what Wikipedia is made with) seemed fine but I didn't see how to create an own wiki there).
Thanks in advance for any help! ![]()

Hello,
MindTouch has a hosted wiki service based off of our product Deki Wiki. It is Free to use and includes the ability to have private wikis. There are no ads and we include tagging of pages that can be aggregated on a page so you can easily build a page that shows all of the orphaned pages. For only $99/year you can upgrade to Pro which gives you 10 gigs of space, the ability to add a custom url, and custom HTML areas for scripts and ads if desired.
You can sign up for your wiki here: http://wik.is

Hello,
Thank you for your reply! I've created a wiki there and I'm testing it at the moment. I am, however, quite new to wiki's and I'm only a beginner at creating them. That's part of the reason why I wanted a private wiki.
I have yet to figure out how to create a page with all of the orphaned pages like you said (is the same possible for a page with all of the wanted pages?), but I'll look into that soon. In the meantime, can you tell me if it's possible to surf to a Random page that exists on the wiki?

In regards to creating a page with the orphaned pages on them, you would tag the pages you consider as orphaned and then you would be able to aggregate those pages by entering the following script in the editor on the page that you want the pages to appear:
{{wiki.search("your_tag_for Orphan_Pages")}}
This will display a list of all of the orphaned pages with the tag you associate with them, like orphaned.
In regards to to surfing to a random page, you can set it up so that a random page will appear on any page. This uses a similar syntax as above but you can chnage how often it will present a new page.
{{wiki.anypage("the search term")}}
These functionality are just scratching the surface of how robust Deki Wiki is. I recommend you watch our demos on this page to learn more about the functionality of Deki Wiki: http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Deki_wiki/Demo

Hello,
I watched a few demo's and tried some things. It seems the options you gave are interesting, but there's a few things that I'm still wondering about.
For example, the thing about orphaned pages is that they're often orphaned without the wiki creators being aware of that, and/or forgotten about. That's why it would be nicer if there was some way they could be listed without them having to be tagged. Is there no other way to do this?
About the random page, I like the concept of what you proposed, but it seems limited because of the need to include a search term. It won't search for tags either, so you can't just create a tag for all pages. I could make the search term something like "the" or another word that would be likely to be on (almost) any page, but that still seems like a bit of a stretch.
Regardless, I'm liking most of what I'm seeing and seriously considering going through with my wiki on Deki Wiki. Thanks for your suggestion!

Vincent,
It would be great if you could post these questions in our community forums here: http://forums.opengarden.org so that the whole community can benefit from it. I don't know if I mentioned it, but Deki Wiki is open source and we like sharing information with our community.
Thanks
