I have become an addict of MediaWiki, just for the purpose that I love the "template" ability of MediaWiki so much. But, I am trying to decide on a wiki engine to install on my laptop to have as a personal notetaking method, and MediaWiki is just a bit to heavy and slow for my tastes for running off my laptop. So I'm looking for something a bit lighter and faster; it doesn't have to be as feature-rich as MediaWiki, but needs to have those templates.
The only problem being that the function that MediaWiki calls "Templates" most other wikis call "Plugins", and I don't like the treatment that a 'plugin' is written once and remains static after creation. MediaWiki has the template files incorporated into the wiki and can be modified as they go. Also, what other wiki engines call "Templates" are what MediaWiki calls "Skins"; the actual format of the page that shows the wiki itself, not something that can be used to format text within the wiki.
So I'm asking for help from anyone who's tried some other wikis and knows what I'm talking about with the MediaWiki templates, as I'm having no luck searching for other wikis with this feature, since it's called so many different things. So is there a wiki engine that allows you to include content from another wiki page and have that other wiki page also allow some slight programming variation?
