Acquia Drupal

I would like to find out how is drupal different from wiki and collaboration tools. I know that it is a content management system, but does it have comparable features to other products in the ZDNet sweetspot

Re: Acquia Drupal

We use Drupal for our website and Projectforum wiki for collaboration.

Drupal has an amazing array of features.  It is great for structured content, blogging and visitor comments.  It can even be used as a wiki. But we find that Drupal's rich feature set is also its weakness for straight-up wiki application.

Features such as advanced formatting, workflow design, granular user permissions, page layout, and many others that are highlighted in most wiki engine comparisons can be counterproductive.  Many novice wiki administrators and users will attempt to tweak all these features and in the process end up killing collaboration.

The most important feature in a wiki, by far, is ease of use (access and editing).

We use our wiki for our QMS, for project management, for software development and for client interaction.  Success in all these applications depends on the early and eager contributions of the workgroup, and this, in turn, depends on ease of use.

If what you are looking for is great collaboration, then pick a wiki that you can fire up in 10 minutes, then turn off all the fancy features (including, yes, wysiwyg editing), and give full access to everyone in your workgroup.  After folks get used to the tool and its snowballing benefits, then you can turn on those features that you really miss.  But there wont be many.

Good luck!
