Search Engine Optimization

I'd love to know if any of the wiki software provide assistance with search engine optimization (SEO). For example, does the software allow you to specify the META tags for a page? Does the software automatically submit new pages to search engines?

I realize that the most effective SEO is excellent content. At the same time, little things like META tags can make a difference and it would be nice to know if any of the wiki software companies have given some thought to SEO.

Thank you,

Mark

Re: Search Engine Optimization

Hi,

sorry, but for mostly used search engines META tags mean nothing... Much more important is proper link building, nice (and stable) URLs.

Re: Search Engine Optimization

As I said in my original post I realize they are not the most important aspect of a website. However, I would not agree that META tags "mean nothing" to search engines.

As an article on SearchEngineWatch said:

But what about search engines! The title tag is crucial for them. The text you use in the title tag is one of the most important factors in how a search engine may decide to rank your web page (see the Search Engine Placement Tips section for more details). In addition, all major crawlers will use the text of your title tag as the text they use for the title of your page in your listings.

and

Meta Description: This tag enjoys much support, and it is well worth using.

The wiki software I'm currently using (Wikispaces) is excellent in most respects. Nonetheless, I wish I could change the Title tag since the Title in place now is confusing as it does not accurately describe my site.

Re: Search Engine Optimization

An Oddmuse user recently posted an extension that allows you to modify the title of a page.

Writing something similar for META tags would be trivial, of course, but nobody has done it, yet.

Right now the Rails folks put everything in a Wiki, which is Hawaiian for »can’t find shit.« –  Zed

But I can see that Wikispaces __does__ let you choose the title content... e.g. here: http://lern.wikispaces.com/Travel+and+Hotel+Information
the title reads: title>lern &raquo; Travel and Hotel Information </title>

I suppose it reflects the URL somehow... But from my experience it is really not worh implementing meta description in wikis... at least these hosted ones (I run one too - designed with SEO in mind).
