Google buying JotSpot

http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/ … ogles.html

I might be a little pessimistic, but I foresee a substantial impact on the market of opensource wiki solutions (at least those targeted at end users, certainly not for companies, development teams and organisations, who would still opt for self-hosted solutions). I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

Re: Google buying JotSpot

I believe the cake is big enough for free hosted wikis and open source wikis, especially of you look at the trends. See Google trends of "wiki" vs. "blog": http://www.google.com/trends?q=blog%2C+wiki

My personal take on the JotSpot acquisition is at

Re: Google buying JotSpot

Yes, there's 2 distinct segments here: the average user that does not have too much to spend and needs a frre, hosted solution ..sorta like a Sandbox where they can play around.

But there's also the 'willing to pay big bucks, need stability, security and scalability' I.T decision makers that are carefully looking at Enterprise Wiki solutions. This is going to be a very interesting market moving forward...

Re: Google buying JotSpot

Peter, got a 404 on your personal take - interested in reading it.

without doing much research, i'd be pleased to see a direct conversation thread to wiki integration.  wikispaces kinda hacks it in but it doesn't really work that well IMHO.

if course, i respect proponents of the "wiki IS the conversation" paradigm!

Re: Google buying JotSpot

The cause of the 404 was the trailing comma, the forum software includes that as part of the URL (which is a bug); I added a space to make the link work.

For the implementer: This regular expression excludes trailing punctuation from the link:

Code:

/(^|[\-\*\s\(])(https?\:[^\s\<\>\"]+[^\s\.\,\!\?\;\:\)\<])/

Re: Google buying JotSpot

I have my doubts Google will be able to take an even larger part of the cake than what jotspot already has. Sure Google has a lot of power and name recognition, but they aren't always successful. It doesn't seem like they've gotten very far with their Page Creator[1] and YouTube has even gone downhill[2] since Google took over. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Google and they've done some amazing things, I just don't think they will have a "substantial impact" on everything they get involved with.
