Wikis with content approval?

People who are new to the concept of wikis often ask for a way to approve edits before they go live.

Most wikis do not support such a feature because this goes against the very spirit of being open and quickly editable. Implementing an approval workflow can greatly hinder wiki adoption and nullify the positive effects a wiki can have.

Have a look at this post for some more discussion about this topic.

Re: Wikis with content approval?

I'm working in an ISO9001:2008 certified company. We want to assess whether a wiki can improve our document control process, in the first place for managing guidelines and manuals. These documents (Word files) are mostly created by several persons. As mentioned, Wikis generally do not support a feature to approve edits before they go live because this hinders contribution, participation, communication and collaboration. This way of working however conflicts with the ISO requirement that documents must been approved for adequacy prior to issue. Do I have to conclude than that a wiki is not suited in an ISO9001:2008 environment? Actually I believe that a wiki with an approval feature can be a great tool in an ISO9001 environment. I'd like to hear experiences from others on this issue.
